1. ‘Family’ politics

    My review on tvguide.ca

Vote Claire Dunphy for City Council!

Wednesday night saw the return of Modern Family after a spring hiatus. It was voting day for the Dunphy family as they all promised to put their best foot forward and help Claire win the election for City Council. (Remember she started campaigning way back when she demanded a stop sign be erected to “slow down [her] neighbours”?) Phil was just as excited as Claire to get it going, especially since he would get to be the “First Husband.”

Cam and Mitch put out all the stops for the day, renting a megaphone to attach to the top of their car, which was transformed into the Claire-mobile. They drove around town shouting out encouraging things like, “I can see Claire-ly now the Dwayne is gone!” That is, until they quickly realized the power of the megaphone. After getting a stranger to pick up some trash, they drove around grinding their many axes until their overuse turned the megaphone against them. The button got stuck on playback, broadcasting their entire conversation about a friend’s possibly gay fiancé to the street. Where she was standing.

Jay and Gloria were happy to lend a hand too. Gloria made an effort to cold call some potential voters at the Alex-run phone station (their kitchen), but quickly learned that her convincing powers lie in her, ahem, appearance. Jay was ready to vote until he saw that an old one-night stand was running the poll booth. When Gloria asked him why he was running away he explained that the line was too long, to which she responded, “It’s only three people. And no one has a gun.” Colombia comedy. Gotta love it.

Phil’s job was to drive the senior citizens to the polls, but he was quickly derailed by his very first pick-up. Luke’s old pal from next door made Phil spend the entire day running his errands, causing Phil to also fail at his task.
I guess you could say this Family is all heart and no execution, since all of their plans failed in one way or another. Even Claire was road blocked, so to speak, by an old fake tooth falling out. But the tooth wasn’t all she lost this week.
When the votes were counted, Claire was not elected, upsetting her, and interestingly, Haley. In a rare moment of true emotion from the eldest Dunphy child, Haley cried to her mom about receiving only rejection letters from colleges, and now being too scared to open the last envelope and fail her family. They all rallied around her as she tore it open to discover she had not been accepted, but had been waitlisted! Her parents were proud as they high-fived and shouted, “We’ll take it!” and “Our daughter might be going to college!”

But back to the election. Claire ended up getting her stop sign from Dwayne as a way to silence her, but now she sees something else is necessary: speed bumps.

  3. ‘Modern’ Christmas

It was a fast-forward holiday for the ‘Family’

Just when you think Modern Family has a formula (and I mean that in the best way possible—a formula for success!) they switch it up and do something new, always keeping us on our toes! The usual character match-ups were thrown out the window for this week’s sleigh bell-ringing storylines, along with the usual interview scenes (I do have to admit that I missed hearing the golden Phil-isms).

In “Express Christmas,” the Dunphy-Pritchett-Delgado clan realized (while lazing by the pool on a sunny Dec. 16) that this was the last day they all would be free to gather and celebrate the holiday. Spurred by a very un-heartfelt apology from Claire and Mitch’s mom about why she’d be away this year, the family put their game faces on. They divided and conquered to put on the best express Christmas possible in the next few hours. Phil, of course, was the cheerleader.

We got to see some new character pairings as everyone went off on their assigned tasks. Jay and Cam were in charge of gift wrapping, which was a cinch thanks to Cam’s super stocked and organized wrapping station that could have made Monica Geller jealous. Mitch and Alex had a couple of hilarious scenes as they found a neurotic common ground in their perfectionist tree picking and their overly defensive gay activism. Even Lily added her two cents with some cute one-liners like, “I have two daddys!”

Claire and Haley went on a shop-to-the-death gift hunt, very clearly sponsored by Target, to get everything on their gift list in record time. Haley even showed her family holiday spirit by sneakily taking potential gifts out of other customers’ hands and throwing them into her own shopping cart. I really liked seeing Haley with a gung-ho attitude to get the job done. I always knew she had it in her to be more than just the typical teenager annoyed with her parents that constantly interrupt her earth-shattering texting life.

Gloria and Luke, one of the most unlikely pairings, ended up being one of favourites. There were so many jokes that came out of the confusion between Gloria saying “Luke” as opposed to “look” that I was kept laughing for three different scenes. Their mission: retrieve the old Christmas angel from the attic, which resulted in Luke’s foot going through the ceiling, obviously.

Meanwhile, Phil and Manny went grocery shopping and then to a shady back alley where Phil was determined to get the perfect gift to buy Jay’s affections: a vintage Joe Dimaggio baseball card. But Manny got scared of the sketchy card salesman and ended up tasing Phil, leaving him jumpy and with no control of his limbs for the rest of the episode. Only Ty Burrell could make this absolutely hilarious and, at the same time, earn our sympathies. And thanks to the taser, the mint condition baseball card was soon a crumpled ball of paper. Oh, poor Phil!

The plans all came to a screeching halt when Mitch and Alex’s perfect tree fell and was run over by Gloria and Luke in the car as they were on their way to the Dunphy house. They were so freaked out that they accidently threw the angel out the window and broke it. Phil and Manny also returned without a turkey after the card guy took it from them as payment, leading everyone to give up on express Christmas.

But Gloria and Jay both saved the day however, as Gloria acted as a stand-in mommy for Claire and Mitch, who she knew felt abandoned, and Jay brought Christmas to California with a snow machine. The entire family frolicked in the snow-covered yard and their love of the holidays was renewed. Ah, success. Papa bear always knows best.

  4. Act your age!

    2011-10-20

The adults lose it on ‘Modern Family’

Wednesday’s new episode of one of my favourite shows of the year showcased Phil and Claire’s younger, and some might say wilder, sides, while displaying the opposite in Cam and Mitch.

It started slowly as Phil and Haley began their father-daughter bonding day. Phil took Haley to his alma matter to show her what college life is like with a tour and a pit stop at his favourite restaurant. Seeing both clueless Phil and perfectly-put-together Haley with chicken wing sauce all over their faces was enough to get this episode rolling for me. Though I was a little thrown by Haley going extremely out of character and rejecting a party invite in lieu of hanging out with dad, all was rectified when Phil let her go anyway.

Meanwhile, Claire was excited to have a night to herself so she relied on the usually-exuberant Cam and Mitch to take her out. Much to her dismay, however, the two were quick to poop on the party and wished for an early exit. Their retired married couple behavior was a wake-up call for the guys as they realized they were in a major rut. Without a second thought, an intoxicated Claire let Cam and Mitch go as she had her fun night with their gay friends. But she, of course, managed to find the one non-gay at the party who got her extra drunk and into a tighter and slightly more inappropriate red dress. Claire didn’t have her moment of realization until she had embarrassed herself fully in front of the judgmental neighborhood moms at Luke’s sleepover. Obviously he’s not gay – he’s just French. Explains everything!

Jay had me laughing the most last night. He kept insisting that Gloria come sit and watch her Spanish telenovella because she loves it and she made him promise to spend more time with her this way. But while Gloria was pre-occupied with Manny’s mysterious internet purchase that had him locked away for hours in his room, Jay’s insistence on watching the soap was unwavering. When Gloria forced Jay to go check on Manny (in case he was in a “discovery” stage), Jay later called a friend to find out some vital info: who shot who and why?! Gotta love this show.
It turned out that Manny wasn’t discovering anything except how to defy gravity as he hung from the ceiling with a weighted helmet on, trying to make himself taller. Seriously. But would you expect any less from this eternal Casanova-wannabe?

After hanging out with the college kids at the bar, Phil got so worried about Haley being at a frat party that he tracked her down with GPS. He switched right back into Dad-mode and busted into the room, embarrassing a completely sober and (for once) rule-abiding Haley. But then the father-daughter pair had the sweetest final moment that only this show could pull off without being full-on Full House cheesy. Phil told her that keeping her safe has been his job since the day she was born and Haley forgave him by offering to accompany him on a tray-sled ride down the grassy hill. I guess sometimes, it’s just more fun to not act your age.

Tight ropes and juice fasts on ‘Modern Family’

Though not as funny as last week’s, the season’s third episode of Modern Family, “Phil On Wire,” still had me laughing out loud at its high points. My favourite part was watching Cam and Mitch bawl their eyes out whilst hugging in the ocean and subsequently being knocked over by a wave. But let’s back up a second.

Cam decided it was time for a juice fast, and rather than taking the blame when this plan would inevitably fail, Mitch decided to join in. Then we got to experience six of the seven stages of dietary grief from Cam.  After the first stage (a clean sweep of any unhealthy food) and the second (attack Mitchell), came my personal favourite, Stage 3: “Soap actress.” Then Cam moved on to the “rush of epiphanies” stage and the regular standbys, “despair” and “rage.”

Mitch, surprisingly, was the one to bring the unexpected final stage to life beautifully at his boss’s benefit party during the telling of a sad tale of a drowning seal due to pollution. Cue Mitch’s uncontrollable and inconsolable hysterics. His wails that could go head-to-head with an Italian widow’s had me in tears of a whole other kind, especially when Cam moved him to the beach where they had it out and made up with the gentle hand of the ocean waves. Classic.

While Gloria furiously fought Jay on his inability to discipline their dog, Stella, who was eating her best shoes, Phil donned his jazz shoes (or “wire walkers” as he called them) in an attempt to fulfill his lifelong dream of walking a tightrope. Who knew? In typical Phil fashion, he failed miserably at first, but with Luke’s suggestion to raise the stakes (and the wire to 7 feet above the ground), his goal was realized.

Last, but not least, Haley reached a whole new level of brainless when we learned that Alex was moved up a math level into her sister’s class (because obviously Haley is way behind her peers). Not to worry Haley, as mom said, “Well hang in there. In a couple more years, you’ll have [the school] all to yourself again.”

    Gotta love brutally honest parents.

  6. Double trouble

Check out my TV’s Top 10 favourite twins on tvguide.ca!

    2011-06-13

You may or may not know this, but many young characters on TV are portrayed by twins — not only to share the acting load, but because of child labour laws, too. In some instances, twins are even used to fill the roles of identical siblings rather than having one actor pull double duty.

June 13, 2011 marks the 25th birthday of arguably the most famous twins in the entertainment biz: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. To celebrate their quarter-century milestone, we’ve compiled a list of the best twins on television. Some very popular characters have been portrayed by identical siblings and may surprise you.

Who made the cut for our favourite twosomes? Click here to find out.

    Thoughts? Comment below.

    1. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen
The top spot on the list has to go to the birthday girls themselves, who are actually fraternal twins. Both girls started acting at the tender age of nine months, famously sharing the role of Michelle Tanner on Full House from 1987 until the show’s demise in 1995. They were credited jointly as Mary-Kate Ashley Olsen to keep viewers from catching on that it was two girls who were delivering Michelle’s favourite (and adorable) one-liners, such as “You got it, dude!” and “You’re in big trouble, mister!” The girls got to act side-by-side in four different episodes of Full House, though, including the series finale where one played an amnesia-riddled Michelle and the other, her conscience.

The Olsens’ careers did not stop at Full House, however, despite some unfruitful projects. Mary-Kate and Ashley also played twins on the short-lived shows Two of a Kind and So Little Time, as well as in films like It Takes Two, Passport to Paris and New York Minute. In addition to acting, the girls also became the face of a mystery book series, multiple clothing lines and Barbie dolls, among other things.

    2. Dylan and Cole Sprouse
After the Olsens, the path was paved for young twins. These fraternal doubles landed their first shared TV role when they were just eight months old, playing Patrick Kelly on Grace Under Fire for five years. Afterwards, Dylan and Cole shared roles in films as well — their breakout movie was Big Daddy, which co-starred Adam Sandler.

What some people may not know is that Cole alone played Ross’ son Ben on Friends, but the two brothers worked together again when they landed what grew to be a smash-hit TV show for kids and pre-teens: The Suite Life of Zack and Cody (2005-2008), which then nabbed a sequel titled The Suite Life on Deck (2008-2011). The boys continued to portray brothers Zack and Cody in The Suite Life Movie, too, which was released in 2011.

Last year, both Dylan and Cole were accepted to New York University and plan to begin studying there soon.

    3. Cynthia and Brittany Daniel

Cynthia and Brittany made their acting debut in an episode of The New Leave It To Beaver after modelling for teen magazines. Following this, Brittany scored a lead part in a lesser-known Sarah Michelle Gellar show called Swans Crossing. Finally, the girls landed their breakout roles (the only well-known ones, too) as opposing twin sisters Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield on Sweet Valley High, a teen drama that aired for four seasons before being cancelled due to low ratings.

Since then, Cynthia has given up acting in lieu of photography, while Brittany has carried out her Tinseltown career, starring in The Game for the past four years.

    4. Tia and Tamera Mowry

Tia and Tamera Mowry are best known for playing twin sisters of the same names on Sister, Sister. From 1994-99, these identical twins portrayed the Landry sisters who were separated at birth and reunited as teenagers. The Mowrys also have a connection to the Olsens as Sister, Sister was developed specifically for them after a producer spotted them on the set of Full House with their brother, Tahj, who had a recurring guest role on the family show as Teddy, one of Michelle’s best friends.

Currently, Tia plays Melanie Barnett Davis on The Game, starring alongside Tahj and Sweet Valley High twin Brittany Daniel. Tamera was last seen in the ABC Family series Roommates. Both of the twins are now married.

    5. Sullivan and Sawyer Sweeten
It might be hard to believe, but Ray Barone’s adorable twin boys are now 16 years old! Sullivan and Sawyer started playing Michael and Geoffrey Barone, respectively, on Everybody Loves Raymond at the age of one. They were joined by their real-life older sister Madylin, who portrayed Barone sibling Ally. During their 10 years growing up on Raymond, the boys also shared the role of Milton on Even Stevens.

    6. Blake and Dylan Tuomy-Wilhoit
Yet another connection to the Olsen twins: Blake and Dylan played Michelle Tanner’s younger cousins, Nicky and Alex Katsopolis, on Full House. The twins were introduced in 1992 as the children of Uncle Jessie (John Stamos) and Aunt Becky (Lori Loughlin), and continued to star on the series until its final bow in 1995. Both Blake and Dylan quit acting after Full House and lead the lives of average 20-year-olds today.

    7. Max and Charlie Carver
Max and Charlie Carver are 22, but have only been acting since 2008, when they landed the roles of Porter and Preston Scavo on ABC’s Desperate Housewives. The twins have played Lynette’s oldest sons since Season 5. Previously, the roles were filled by other famous acting twins Brent and Shane Kinsman (Cheaper by the Dozen), who portrayed their characters at a younger age. Since he began appearing on Housewives, Max has also guest-starred on The Office and Good Luck Charlie.

    8. Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush
From 1974-82, NBC primetime drama Little House on the Prairie delighted audiences with stories based on the novels by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Like the Olsens, the Greenbush twins were credited as one person, Lindsay Sidney Greenbush, for their shared role as little Carrie Ingalls.

A couple of years and some small cameo roles later, the twins put acting behind them. Today, they are 41 years old with interests that include horses and boxing.

    9. Diane and Erin Murphy
These fraternal twins shared the role of Tabitha Stephens on Bewitched for just one season. As they grew, the girls began to physically differentiate, so Erin took over for the remaining six seasons of the show. Diane left the industry at the age of 13, while Erin continued to act in over 100 commercials and in TV shows like Lassie. She’s since gone on to become a makeup artist, a fashion stylist, an acting teacher, a game show host and a stunt double.

    10. Ella and Jaden Hiller
Many people may not realize that Mitchell and Cameron’s adopted baby girl, Lily, is actually portrayed by twin girls Ella and Jaden Hiller. The girls are still small toddlers, but if Modern Family has as long of a TV run as Full House did, these twins could potentially become the next Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.
