1. Deathly ‘Circle’

Cassie saves the witches rom a close brush with death

I love a good Halloween episode of any show. But with The Secret Circle, you just know that a spooky house party complete with shadows, creepy decorations, and unidentified people in masks is a recipe for disaster. At least for the witches.

On Thursday’s episode (“Masked”), Cassie and Faye went to a creepy witch store to search for costumes where Cassie had an oddly intense connection with the weird owner, Calvin, and Faye tried on a “shirt” that was more like a piece of scarf covering just her chest.  Grandma Jane informed Cassie that Calvin was also a witch who knew Amelia back in the day.

While setting up for the party, Cassie found a broken piece of the knife her attacker used last week, which had odd symbols carved into it. On her way back to the shop to figure out more about the blade however, she ran into Jake, who secretly stalled her car with the touch of his hand and headed to the store to forcefully warn Calvin. He made sure the older witch wouldn’t give Cassie any information by threatening to kill him with what I like to call “a little jar of death.” The jar, once containing the blood of a witch, one of their possessions and some secret witchy ingredient, can kill said witch at the strike of a match. Double, double, toil and trouble.

When Calvin evaded her questions, Cassie went to her destined-by-the-fates future lover Adam, who helped her discover that the blade’s symbols represented witch hunters. And speaking of hunters, back at yet another abandoned boathouse (Chance Harbor seems to be chockfull of them), Jake and his hunting captain (guest star JR Bourne) were setting up death jars for each member of the circle. Apparently, Bourne was super-convincing as a hunter of Teen Wolf and now is the only actor who knows how to locate supernatural teenagers.

At the Boathouse restaurant (see, I told you), an oddly intense yet informative meeting occurred between Adam’s dad and Calvin, who strongly expressed how important it was to inform Cassie about her father. Apparently, you never know which witch parent the child will favour, and she doesn’t know about the dark magic inside of her thanks to her dad, John Blackwell. It’s not like Cassie will find out any of this soon since right after this conversation, Jake found Calvin and sentenced him to a gruesome jar-death. Eww.

Meanwhile, the party was hoppin’ at Cassie’s. Slut-on-the-fly Faye kept Jake distracted while Cassie investigated his room next door, after he said some suspicious things about the hunting blade.  Cassie found an entire set of witch hunting knives in Jake’s room, but he walked in and tried to explain them away, blaming their existence on his dead brother, Nick. Nice one, jerk. And let’s not forget that while this was going on, the circle members were being brought down one by one by masked henchmen at the party.

The big finish of this week’s episode occurred in two places at once, both of them boathouses. When Cassie awoke to find herself tied in a death circle with her friends, she went into some sort of frenzy and ended up saving them all by sheer screaming alone. Her potent underlying dark magic broke the surface and set them all free from the hunters, though Jake the snake still found a way to make himself look innocent.

Afterwards, while Cassie received a mysterious envelope containing secret documents, we saw that Grandma Jane’s road trip was not to end so well. She went to find another elder, Henry (a.k.a Faye’s now-dead grandfather), and in the process of discovering his dead body and his hidden crystal, Jane was bludgeoned in the head by a mysterious intruder.

Hmm. Something wicked this way comes. Or, is already there. Ok, that’s the last witchy cliché, promise.

The Secret Circle airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET, The CW/ CHCH.

  2. A ‘Secret’ revealed

    2011-10-14

The ‘Circle’ suffers a major blow

When I started watching The Secret Circle this year, I was thinking, “Awesome. A show about teenage witches without Melissa Joan Hart or a laugh track. What could be better?” Never could I have ever imagined how creepy and frightening it would be! And I’m loving every minute of it, of course.

As if the opening title song isn’t scary enough, now I have to contend with demons and possessions that could put up a good fight with the chick from The Exorcist. Super. Last week’s snake demon made its way into circle-member Melissa in last night’s newest episode, “Slither,” which was less than fun for everyone involved.

The episode began with the re-introduction of Cassie’s grandmother as she gave the “you can talk to me about anything” speech in order to avoid repeating past mistakes that were made with Cassie’s mother. Cassie seemed to want to ask for her grandmother’s advice, but dictator Diana squashed this plan like a fly out of the fear of having their powers taken away by the elders. Oh, and let us not forget the creepy parent tag team of Dawn and Charles were obviously up to their usual creepy shenanigans as they tried (and failed) to create more crystals.

Melissa’s possession unraveled slowly and made me squirm in my seat as I watched her behave erratically violent with Nick and Faye. And the intensity only climbed once the circle became aware that they had a visitor of sorts, which was enough to end Diana and Adam’s attempt at a romantic night. After Nick clocked a disturbing demon-Melissa in the head and she was tied up, Cassie ran to grandma Jane and spilled the beans, begging for her help and expertise, which she brought forcefully, along with a crystal of her own.

In her attempts to save Melissa however, the demon was transferred over to Nick, who scurried off while the others learned that a moldy suitcase they had found was full of more of these pleasant demon snakes that needed to be burned or drowned ASAP. As the suitcase burned, Demon Nick found its original summoner: Faye’s mom, Dawn. She called in Charles, who obediently carried out her wishes once they agreed that the only way to save Nick was to drown the demon inside him. This, as it turned out, looked very similar to just drowning an innocent teenager, which they did unblinkingly.

My reaction to this final act: WTF!? I didn’t think that one of the six circle members would ever be killed within the first five episodes! Now I’m just wondering how Adam will cope with being the only teenage male lead.

The Secret Circle airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on CHCH / The CW and Fridays at 9 p.m. ET on Much.
